But it is also for the already wise that they may add to their learning.

When: During the early parts of Solomons reign.

Why: To let the reader know that Solomon’s writing to the young to give wisdom and discipline.

Interpretation:

Paraphrase:

1-6: Solomon’s Proverbs are meant so that the reader can attain wisdom and discipline by reading his practical scripture on prudent and righteous living.

7-9: Following God with reverence is the beginning of knowledge, wisdom, and discipline but fools despise these things and reject God. Additionally, we should obey our parents.

10-19: Don’t get caught up with people who pursue unrighteous gain. It sounds tempting in the moment but fruits are temporary and will only lead to an unfulfilling life without God.

20-31:God extends wisdom to us in the streets. He meets us where we are not just in Church or at religious events. Even when we mess up, if we accept his rebuke the Lord opens himself up to us and makes himself known. But if we ignore God, we may be alright on Earth or for a temporary time, but we will eventually fall hard times, calamity, on earth or in judgement. Then it will be too late.

32-33: Waywardness will kill the simple and be known by the outcomes of their actions but whoever listens to the Proverbs (Wisdom) can be at ease.
